as a key driver of the markets this week. let's start with the trading action here. bob pisani joins me on the floor. we're up 40 points on the trading session. >> dow jones industrial average started off very much on the weak side, 3-2 advancing to declining stocks. at 3:00 eastern time the ism services numbers came out, better than expected. new order numbers p better than expected. that lifted the market. the dollar stronger against euro. when that happens usually materials and energies are weaker. that's what's happening today. there's been some collateral damage with other stocks that are suppliers to hp. advanced micromoved down on that news. that's a new three-year low for advanced micro. >> i'm looking for the silver lining. >> we've been moving up for several days in a row right now and are approaching the highs we had a week and a half ago. >> we'll be following jon fortt and bob pisani. ty, back to you. >>> let's drill down on some of the economic issues that are going to come up in tonight's presidential debate. a positive read on jobs ahead of friday's employment report. on

something to the people. protection for pensions. well, bob pisani just happened to get back from spain, and he sent out his always interesting morning notebook. bob, i loved this one in particular because you basically said that what we keep quoting as a jobless rate in spain may be bunk, that people are simply working under the table? >> yeah, i'll give you an example. 25% unemployment is what they're talking about. but i had a landlord in barcelona. rented an apartment for one week. they asked for the payment in cash. they didn't want a check, didn't want anything else. my point is the bars lonens don't necessarily believe that. i wasn't in madrid, but in barcelona they're gripped by their own kind of secession of the fever. they're thinking of reseeding -- or seceding from spain. it's crazy. i was there for this la mers festival. a celebration of all things regional, catalonian. they sing catalonian songs, wave catalonian flags. there's a lost people that move by in these giant outfits throughout the day. it's really a lot of fun. but it's turned into this big national thing or roor

day. let's turn it over to bob and rick on these markets. bob, i'm going to get out to you first of all. so much for d cumming, right? we did it again yesterday mir reporting when we got those results from spain. are markets smooth to off their lows? >> recapitalization about in line with expectations. i think more importantly a lot of people are straight the fourth quarter the way they wanted the third quarter, that is play the global slowdown. in theory we're seeing signs of a global slowdown but just not in the stock market so much. if you look what's happened here so far in the third quarter, u.s. indexes have done well. s&p 500 having a great month overall. these are for the monthly numbers. and more importantly, the global indexes are holding up very well. so this idea of playing the global slowdown while it may make some sense isn't really working out that well in reality. brazil, spain and germany have been outperforming the u.s. in a month where there's been a lot of concerns about global slowdowns. cleaning up europe is the major issue here. of course central bank inter

right now. bob pisani's joining me now on the floor. you're up a little sigh of relief there. a rally that's carried over to the u.s. but are the underpinnings here at home strong enough? >> new order xoen fent norcompo ism moved the market up in addition to follow-through from europe. the dow industrials were off the high 2-1 advancing to declining stocks. it was 3-1 earlier but you could see we've dipped a little just in the last 15 minutes or so. in terms of what's moving here, well, right across the board, pretty nice rally here. energy materials, industrials, even consumer staples participating in this rally. we're expecting very significant increase in earnings about 20% over last year. >> that's almost a 4% gain in goldman sachs. >> look at the overall group moving to the up side. we need some positive earnings commentary from this group for the fourth quarter for the s&p to make numbers. finally, airlines are up as the international air transport association talked about a higher profit outlook for the airlines this year. given the prices i've been paying for travel? there oug
